The sentencing hearing for the three police officers convicted in the beating death of Mario Deane concluded Tuesday evening in the Westmoreland Circuit Court.
Corporal Elaine Stewart, the senior cop involved, was sentenced to five years on the manslaughter conviction, one year for misconduct in a public office, and one year for doing acts tending and intending to pervert the course of justice.
The sentences are to run concurrently, meaning she will serve a total of five years.
Meanwhile, constables Marlon Grant and Juliana Clevon were sentenced to three years in prison, suspended for two years.
On May 25, the three police officers were found guilty on all counts including manslaughter and misconduct in a public office.
Corporal Stewart was found guilty on an additional count of intent to pervert the course of justice.
Mario Deane died on August 6, 2014, three days after he was beaten by other prisoners at the Barnett Street Police lock-up in St. James.
He had been arrested by the police for having a ganja spliff.
Reacting after the sentencing on Tuesday, Deane's mother, Mercia Fraser, said she was disappointed and had expected more considering a life was lost.
"It shows me that in spite of all these years...it seems like his life really means nothing," she lamented.
Ms. Fraser said she plans to sue the state.
