Seven establishments in St. James closed for health breaches

A bakery is among seven establishments that were ordered closed by the St. James Parish Council and Health Department during a joint operation on Tuesday morning.

Forty establishments were inspected by personnel from both entities as they began enforcing the Public Health Regulations.

Loads of meat and other spoiled food items were dumped during the operation, which was conducted in collaboration with the Island Special Constabulary Force and the National Solid Waste Management Authority.

Tuesday's move came one week after the Parish Council warned operators of food establishments across the second city to get their act together or else face not having their licenses renewed.

Fed up with constant non-compliance, the council has served notice that enforcement will be the order of the day.

The Health Department said Montego Bay is the tourism capital and as such the health of both tourists and locals needs to be safeguarded.

It said every restaurant and food establishment in the parish will be inspected in a bid to identify breaches.

Those found in breach will be prosecuted under the Public Health Regulations.

The council urged the operators to voluntarily comply or face having the license required to operate establishments or as individuals suspended, revoked or not renewed upon expiration, for the breaches identified.

Last year several food establishments in Montego Bay were served temporary closure orders while others were cited for breaches.
