Faced with howls of protest regarding the property tax regime which takes effect on April 1, Finance Minister Audley Shaw has defended the adjustments, saying there are avenues for persons to appeal the new charges.
He said persons dissatisfied with their land valuations have several remedies, including filing an objection with the Commissioner of Land Valuations within 60 days of the notice being served.
In addition, the finance minister said owners of land being used for agricultural production can apply for Agricultural Derating Relief, for up to 50 per cent of the annual tax.
Mr. Shaw said the Government of Jamaica is committed to assisting those persons who cannot afford to pay their property taxes.
He added that relief is available to persons over 65 years old, pensioners, as well as those who are financially challenged and suffering from a disability.
The property tax can be also paid in installments, he said, pointing out that arrangements are in place for property owners to pay their land taxes in monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annual installments.
