The St. Elizabeth Fire Department was kept busy Tuesday morning following two fires in the parish.
Six persons are now homeless following a house fire in the Jerusalem housing scheme, Santa Cruz.
An occupant discovered that a section of a room was on fire about 6:20 a.m. and raised an alarm. The other occupants, including an elderly couple, tried to extinguish the blaze which quickly spread.
The 11 apartment home was destroyed, while two vehicles have been damaged by the fire.
Damage is estimated at $31 million.
A unit from the Santa Cruz and Black River fire stations responded to the scene.
No one was injured.
Fire in Lacovia
Meanwhile, the Lacovia police in St. Elizabeth have commenced an investigation in what they suspect is a case of arson in Barton Isles.
According to reports the police and the fire department were alerted about 1:30 a.m. that fire was seen coming from a house.
One unit from the Santa Cruz Fire Station responded along with the Lacovia Police. On their arrival, several pieces of clothing along with furniture were seen on fire. The blaze was extinguished.
The owner of the house was not present at the time.
Investigators are to return to the scene Tuesday.
