Troy Ellis, the man who pleaded guilty to raping and killing nine-year-old Taliyah Thompson in Discovery Bay, St. Ann, last year, was on Thursday afternoon sentenced to more than 30 years in prison when he appeared before the St. Ann Circuit Court.
The grusome killing of Taliyah in September last year, caused shock and sparked much public outrage.
Investigators reported that the little girl was lured to Mr. Ellis' house at Fortland Road in Discovery Bay, where she was raped and stabbed repeatedly.
Her body was found inside his house by residents of his community.
Ellis, a sanitary worker, attempted to commit suicide after the killing, but was unsuccessful.
He was hospitalised due to self-inflicted knife wounds.
But despite pleading guilty in February and throwing himself at the mercy of the court, Justice Andrea Pettygrew-Collins came down hard on him.
For the offence of murder, Ellis was sentenced to 31 years in prison.
He will have to serve 24 years before becoming eligible for parole.
For the offence of rape, the judge imposed a sentence of 22 years, seven months and two weeks.
He will have to serve 18 years before being eligible for parole.
On the count of grevious sexual assault, Ellis was sentenced to 19 years, four months and two weeks.
He will have to stay behind bars for 15 years before for parole.
For the count dealing with possession of a prohibited weapon, he was given 15 years.
Justice Pettygrew-Collins also sentenced Ellis to life imprisonment for possession of ammunition, with eligibility for parole after 15 years.
