The St. Elizabeth farmer who was named as a person of interest following the seizure of approximately 110 pounds of cocaine at Sangster International Airport in St. James last Monday has been charged.

Renaldo Brooks was charged by investigators after he surrendered at the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) Area 1 office on Monday in the company of his attorney.

After being interrogated, Brooks was charged with possession of cocaine, dealing in cocaine, attempting to export cocaine and conspiracy to export cocaine.

The drugs were discovered on January 26 after anomalies were detected during an electronic examination of a suitcase at the airport that was destined for Canada.

A physical search revealed several sachets containing the cocaine which has an estimated street value of J$30 million.

Mr. Brooks reportedly fled the airport, leaving his luggage behind.

He is scheduled to appear in the St. James Parish Court on Friday.

Superintendent Patrae Rowe, Director of the FNID, previously noted that heightened vigilance at the island's ports remains a priority to disrupt the narcotics trade.

The FNID continues to encourage anyone with information on illicit drugs to contact them at 876-923-6184, police 119 emergency number or visit the nearest police station.
