Assistant Superintendent Leonard Kinloch, operations officer for St. Thomas
The police in St. Thomas are reporting a 63 per cent clear-up rate for murders.
St. Thomas has also recorded notable reductions in robberies, break-ins and larcenies so far this year.
But operations officer for the parish, Assistant Superintendent Leonard Kinloch, says there is a slight increase in cases of murder, shooting and rape.
"So in terms of murders, we are up by one. We are eight, as opposed to seven last year. Our shooting has increased by two - eight opposed to six last year, as also rape - seven opposed to five last year. So we have seen an increase in those areas and we have employed various strategies to combat those activities that are taking place in some areas that are not known for violence," he said.
ASP Kinloch added that St. Thomas has seen an increase in migrant criminals.
"This is as a result of the proactive approach by higher command, dismantling and disrupting criminal organisations within our division. So we have seen persons as far as from St. James, which we have apprehended within the division last month. About four wanted persons we have apprehended so far, two of [them] are from St. James," he noted.
