The major commercial transformation promised for St. Thomas is one step closer to reality with the official opening of the Morant Bay Urban Centre on Thursday morning.

Often considered the forgotten parish, the government says the new urban centre promises growth and prosperity for St. Thomas.

It says the multi-billion dollar unveiling represents a dream made real and not just promises made by those in governance.

"What you are seeing now is a project that is complete and ready for occupancy of our clients who have been given a three-month build out period. During this rent-free period, the clients will be designing their units to their specifications and the contractor will concurrently use this period to complete landscaping, roadworks and any incomplete works or any defects identified," outlined Lyttleton Shirley, Chairman of Factories Corporation of Jamaica.

Additionally, he said work will commence on phase two which involves the building of two additional blocks - one to be used as a medical complex where a variety of medical disciplines will be housed, including an urgent care facility, and the other will facilitate additional government agencies.

The project is a public-private partnership involving the government, Factories Corporation of Jamaica, China Harbour Engineering Company and the National Commercial Bank.

There are also plans to further expand the establishment to facilitate a community micro-business park and farmers outlet.
