Student killed during fight at school

Another rural high school is grappling with the stabbing death of a male student on Tuesday afternoon.

He has been identified as 16-year-old Haig Williams, a student of the Cross Keys High school in Manchester.

Three male students linked to the stabbing are now in police custody.

The incident occurred just about midday when most students had gathered for lunch.

Divisional Commander for the Manchester Police Division, Superintendent Lascelles Taylor says one of the students has confessed to Haig's stabbing.

“There was a fight amongst some boys at the Cross Keys High School in one of the classrooms and during the fight a knife was used to stab one of the students in his side and his leg. He was taken to the Mandeville Hospital by teachers and on arrival he was pronounced dead,” Superintendent Taylor said.

“An investigation was carried out and three male students, all from the same class were taken into custody and they are now being investigated. One has confessed to doing the stabbing …he is going to be charged,” he said.

Sources say investigators are probing reports of a student gang operating at the school.

Efforts to reach Principal Ralph Nelson were unsuccessful as school activities were curtailed following the pandemonium.
