Suriname closer to new coalition government following general election

Suriname has moved closer towards the new coalition government taking up office, even as voters in the Dutch-speaking CARICOM country await the official results of the May 25 general election.

Several opposition parties, led by the main opposition National Democratic Party, on Tuesday signed a letter of intent to form the new coalition government.

Also signing the agreement was the Vice President Ronnie Brunswijk, whose General Liberation and Development Party had been a partner in the current coalition government, headed by President Chandrikapersad Santokhi.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr. Brunswijk said his party had decided to join the new coalition after "a long and good conversation" with the NDP's chair, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, who has been nominated as the presidential candidate to replace Mr. Santokhi.
