A suspect in the theft of a motor vehicle in Malvern, St Elizabeth Saturday morning was fatally shot during a high speed chase with the police.
The deceased has been identified as Mark Allen of Schoolfield in the parish.
The police recovered the stolen Toyota Voxy and seized a Toyota Axio motor car used by the suspect and his cronies.
Superintendent Coleridge Minto, Commanding Officer for the St Elizabeth Police division, revealed that about 3:20 a.m., the police received a report of a vehicle being stolen as well as a shooting in the upper Portsea area of Malvern.
He said during the ensuing police pursuit of the suspects, "armed fired at the police."
He said the chase resulteed in the Voxy crashing in the nearby community of Southampton, at which point "several men alighted and fired at the police."
Continuing his narrative, Superintendent said "the police took evasive action and returned the fire; one man was shot and injured; was taken to Black River Hospital where he was pronounced dead."
The Toyota Axio motor car also crashed on the Southhampton main road, he revealed, adding that the men in that car escaped.
The police are searching for these men and are appealing to residents of Southampton to alert the police to strangers in their community
Superintendent Minto disclosed that this is the third vehicle that has been stolen in Malvern over the last few weeks.
He said the other two vehicles were also recovered.
