The Venezuelan government has criticised Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Kamla Persad-Bissessar for what it calls her "rhetorical obsession" with the South American nation.
Mrs. Persad-Bissessar has since been declared persona non grata by the Venezuelan National Assembly, and all gas deals have been severed between the two countries.
Mrs. Persad-Bissessar sharply criticised CARICOM for its lack of support in the face of Venezuela's aggression towards the twin island state and Guyana.
Venezuelan politicians, including current interim leader Delcy Rodriguez, publicly criticised Persad-Bissessar, warning of a "response," if Venezuela was attacked from local territory.
In its statement, the Venezuelan government rejected the Prime Minister's statement, suggesting that her position contradicted the integrationist spirit and the founding principles of CARICOM itself.
It said her statement did not represent the national consensus and that her attitude compromises relations between the two nations.
