Suspects in murder of Mario Deane being questioned

The police are trying to retain a sign language interpreter to assist in their questioning of  the third man suspected to be involved in the murder of  Mario Deane.

The suspect is hearing impaired and the police have faced challenges questioning him.

Deane, who was charged with possession of  a ganja spliff on August 3, was beaten  while in the Barnett Street Lock up in Montego Bay. He later died in hospital on August 6.

Two other prisoners, Marvin Orr,35 and Adrian Morgan, 25,were charged with murder on the weekend and will appear in court on Wednesday.

INDECOM and the Inspectorate Unit of  the Jamaica Constabulary Force, are also investigating to determine whether police on duty should be charged with breaching policy in the handling and protection of  prisoners.

On Monday morning, Opposition Leader Andrew Holness this morning toured the Barnett Street police station.

Holness went to the cell block where Deane was reportedly beaten by inmates.

And the country will know by Tuesday whether the Jamaica Constabulary Force will be instructed to discontinue arresting persons held with small quantities of  ganja.

This was disclosed to RJR News by Attorney General, Patrick Atkinson  who is to hand down his advice on the issue. There has been much controversy over the issue since the death of  Mario Deane.

Justice Minister Mark Golding and National Security Minister, Peter Bunting sought advice from the Attorney General whether to relax bail conditions for persons arrested for small amounts of  ganja.

The Ganja Future Growers and Producers Association has called for the Government to declare an amnesty on all arrests for uncompressed ganja under one pound.

A member of  the group, attorney-at-law Miguel Lorne, said the Government should institute the amnesty until reforms of  ganja laws are completed
