Several recordings of a conversation between
Superintendent of Police Harry Daley and crown witness Tafari Clarke were
played in court on Monday morning, as the trial of the senior policeman resumed
in the Corporate Area Criminal Court.
The court heard the recordings, despite strong objections raised by Mr. Daley's defence team.
The defence team had tried to block the hearing of the tapes on the basis that no proper identification has been laid by the prosecution.
The prosecution, however accused the defence of using delay tactics.
Following those submissions, the Judge allowed for the hearing of the tapes.
On the recording, the Superintendent is heard telling Mr. Clarke to meet him at a bar on St. John's Road in Spanish Town.
Mr. Clarke, who is in the Witness Box, told the court he was expected to hand over extortion money to the superintendent at that meeting.
The hearing continues at this hour.
Mr. Daley is facing six counts of corruption and six counts of extortion following a six month covert operation conducted by the Anti-Corruption Branch.
Government prosecutors accused him of collecting $20,000 per month as protection money from Mr. Clarke, a resident of Linstead in St. Catherine.
