A police corporal was among three persons who died in separate crashes in St Ann Sunday night into Monday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Corporal Compton Russell, who was assigned to the Claremont police station, Akeem Fulton from Bellair district in Runaway Bay, and Nadine Steele.

Seven people were taken to hospital for treatment.

The first incident occurred about 8:15 p.m., along the Llandovery main road, in the vicinity of Plantation Smokehouse.

It's reported that the driver of a Toyota Axio motor car attempted to overtake a line of traffic when he lost control of the vehicle.

It ended up in the west bound lane and collided with a Nissan Lafesta motor car.

Corporal Russell, who was a passenger in the Lafesta, and Mr Fulton, a passenger in the Toyota Axio, were pronounced dead at St Ann's Bay hospital.

The drivers of the vehicles and a passenger from the Toyota Axio received serious injuries and were admitted.

Rohan Russell, expressed disbelief at his brother's death, as he recalled that he was among the passing motorists.

In the second crash which occurred about 1:45 Monday morning, the driver of a black Subaru Imprezo, with no headlights, veered into the path of a red Toyota Tercel causing a head-on collision along the Richmond main road in the vicinity of Chukka Cove.

Nadine Steele, a passenger in the Tercel, was pronounced dead at St Ann's Bay Hospital.

Four other passengers from that vehicle were also taken to the hospital by a passing motorist.

The police say the driver of the Subaru and passengers fled the scene of the crash and are being sought.

Commanding officer for the St Ann police Division, Superintendent David White said Corporal Russell was a native of the parish who served the Jamaica Constabulary Force for 21 years.

Superintendent White said the corporal will be remembered as a team player and sociable individual.
