Tom Tavares Finson, a longstanding member of the Jamaican Senate, was just appointed President of that body, at its first sitting since the February 25 general election.
Senator Tavares Finson, immediately upon taking the chair, thanked his colleagues for the confidence they had reposed in him (his nomination was seconded by Mark Golding, set to the be the new Leader of Opposition Business), and promised to be fair and impartial in his rulings.
He also promised to relax the rules of debate in the Senate, giving more latitude, making reference, in that regard, to the frustration sometimes experienced by some members of the then Opposition in the last Parliament.
The members on both sides of the Senate were subsequently sworn-in.
