Tourist arrivals resume today

After being closed for more than two months, Jamaica's borders reopened for tourists and other arrivals at midnight Sunday and more than 600 visitors from the United States are scheduled to start arriving on Monday.

Six flights will begin landing at Sangster International Airport at 10:40.

The passengers will be a mix of tourists as well as Jamaicans returning home from several American destinations, including New York, Atlanta and Miami.

In an interview on Sunday with Radio Jamaica News, Tourism Minister Ed Bartlett said the arrival of the first batch of flights will be a test of  the arrangements put in place for the reopening of  the country's borders.

So far, 8,418 approvals have been granted to Jamaicans overseas who have applied on the JamCOVID system for permission to return home, under the controlled re-entry programme.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has said however that there are 1,355 applicants for which health and immigration authorities are awaiting responses to their home quarantine assessment questions.

A statement last weekend from the Office of the Prime Minister said, from June 15 to June 30,  non-nationals who are not business travelers or tourists proceeding to the COVID-19 resilient corridor will be tested for the coronavirus.

If the test is negative, the individual will be placed in quarantine at the intended address or in a government facility for 14 days.

If the test is positive, the individual will be isolated either at their address or in a government facility.
