Traffic restrictions for Downtown Kingston to facilitate drainage improvement

Traffic restrictions are to be imposed in sections of  downtown Kingston this weekend to facilitate drainage improvement works.

The restrictions will be along a section of  Spanish Town Road as well as the entrance to the bus bay at North Parade.

Stephen Shaw, NWA Communication Manager, says the eastbound lane along Spanish Town Road, which takes motorists toward downtown Kingston was reduced to single lane traffic between Industrial Terrace and North Street at 6pm yesterday in preparation for the installation of  grating covers.

The steel plates have disintegrated significantly over the last few days and have become unsafe for vehicles.

The planned works, which are expected to last for ten days, will be carried out in two phases.

The project will be completed with the installation of  metal gratings across the westbound lane.

The works to be carried out at the North Parade bus bay involves the demolition and reconstruction of  three meters of  storm water drain and the recasting of  a section of  the side walk which has fallen into disrepair.

Meanwhile, works planned under the Mandela Highway Reconstruction project tomorrow will affect eastbound traffic in the vicinity of  the JPS Duhaney sub-station.

Both eastbound lanes exiting the newly-built Q-Ramp, will be closed intermittently over a 12-hour period starting at 8am, to facilitate the laying of  conduits to accommodate JPS high voltage cables.

JPS facilities in the area will be placed underground and eight wooden light poles removed to facilitate the continuation of  the road improvement works along the Mandela Highway between the Nestle building and Six Miles.

The works will involve the excavation and raising of  the road to meet the level of  the new sections that have already been completed.
