The tropical depression south east of Jamaica has strengthened into Tropical Storm Iota.

While Iota does not pose a direct threat to Jamaica, the Meteorological Service says the island will still be impacted by the outer bands on the weekend into Monday.

Javed Hudson, Duty Forecaster at the Meteorological Service, said mostly southern and northeastern parishes will experience cloudy conditions, periods of showers and isolated thunderstorms, as well as gusty winds.

He said the rains are not expected to be as extreme as other recent showers.

Iota is expected to become a major hurricane before posing another serious threat of flood rains to Central America.

Hurricane conditions are possible in sections of Honduras and Nicaragua Sunday night or Monday.

Iota is the 30th storm of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, which is two more than the previous record set in 2005.
