Tropical Storm watch remains in effect for Jamaica

A Tropical Storm watch remains in place for Jamaica as Hurricane Felix continues to churn across the open waters of the Caribbean Sea as a Category Five system that is capable of major damage.

Hurricane Felix began a rapid intensification cycle Sunday afternoon.

Top winds increased to 165 miles per hour with gusts possibly as high as 200 miles per hour.

While not an immediate threat to Jamaica the National Meterological Centre says the island could still be affected by the outer bands of the storm.

The forecast track of Hurricane Felix is projecting the centre of the cyclone to pass approximately 300 kilometres or 190 miles south of Jamaica.

The Met office says Eastern parishes should expect scattered showers and gusty winds starting Monday morning and into the afternoon.

All small craft operators are reminded to remain in safe harbour until all warning messages have been lifted and wind and sea conditions have returned to normal.

Hurricane Felix passed north of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao Sunday afernoon.

The A,B,C Islands were spared any strong winds thanks to the compact nature of Felix's wind core, but heavy, locally flooding rain and some coastal flooding from 12-to-16-foot waves pounded the islands.

The storm which passed over the Windward Islands on the weekend left a trail of damage in Grenada, St. Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago.
