The Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard is on high alert amid threats of reprisal for the death of a Venezuelan baby during an operation at sea last weekend.
Minister of National Security, Fitzgerald Hinds, confirmed on Thursday that law enforcement received information about the threat, although he did not provide details.
The nine-month-old baby was among a group of Venezuelans on board a vessel that crossed the border between the two countries last Saturday night, when the Coast Guard said it had to fire on the boat in self-defence.
The Guardian newspaper quoted intelligence sources as stating that the threat of retaliation had come from underworld elements in Venezuela.
Earlier this week, the National Security Minister said the police and the Coast Guard had launched an investigation into the controversial shooting.
