The Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard is now engaged in a search and rescue mission after a Venezuelan vessel with at least 25 people on board sank on its way to the twin island republic.
The Coast Guard said it received a report on Wednesday indicating that a canoe had left Venezuela on Tuesday and was reported to have overturned while at sea.
In a statement, the Coast Guard said four persons have been rescued and 21 are still unaccounted for.
The statement said the Coast Guard will continue to work closely with its Venezuelan counterparts to ensure an effective search and rescue operation.
The Trinidad Express newspaper on Thursday said the illegal immigrants, including two children, may have drowned after the boat overturned while undertaking the three and a half hour journey.
Several Venezuelans have been going to Trinidad to escape the economic and political situation in the South American country.
