TT cop among two killed in prison break

In Trinidad and Tobago, a police officer was among two persons killed Friday as three prisoners staged a brazen jail break in Port of Spain . Two of them remain at large.

Police Constable Sherman Maynard died of gunshot wounds at the Port of Spain General Hospital  after being shot at following the jail break at the Port of Spain Prison. 

A statement from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) said that Maynard, 27, was wounded after the three prisoners exited the prison at around 12:30pm (local time) firing upon police officers who were on duty at the time outside the prison.

“One of the escapees, identified as Allan “Scanny” Martin, 42, was shot and killed by police following an exchange of gunfire in the vicinity of the Port of Spain General Hospital while seeking to elude capture,” the statement said noting that the other two prisoners, Christopher “Monster” Selby, 30, and Hassan Atwell, 41, remain at large.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar has sought to assure citizens saying that the country is not under threat, dismissing also any suggestion of placing the country under a state of emergency.

"There is no uprising throughout the country; there is no other incident that is cause for concern...there is no need for a state of emergency at this time."
