Tyre deflation devices on Highway 2000 working

The Toll Authority of Jamaica says tyre deflation devices which were installed along a section of  Highway 2000 in the central parish of St. Catherine have been achieving the desired results.

The devices were commissioned to deter the illegal use of  the Highway's East West Corridor.

Joan Fletcher, Chief  Executive Officer of  the Toll Authority, confirmed several  motorists trying to illegally access the Freetown Off Ramp and those heading eastbound on the Old Harbour on Ramp have been caught.

In presenting a motion in Parliament last year,  Dr. Omar Davies, Transport Minister said the introduction of  the tyre deflation devices became  necessary  as motorists, in order to avoid paying the toll, were reversing on slip roads along Highway 2000.He added that the illegal practice had resulted in accidents.

The tire deflation devices, also known as traffic spikes, tire shredders, one-way traffic treadles, and stingers were activated on January 3.
