Venezuela's ex-oil minister Tareck El Aissami reappears

More than a year after he resigned from his post as Venezuela's oil minister, Tareck El Aissami was arrested yesterday on corruption allegations.

Mr El Aissami is accused of syphoning off money from Venezuela's state oil company, PDVSA.

Attorney General Tarek Saab announced the arrest and outlined the allegations against the former minister at a news conference.

Mr El Aissami is accused of conspiring with PdVSA executives and officials at the Venezuelan government agency overseeing crypto-currency to steal hundreds of millions of dollars.

He is also accused of treason and misappropriation.

A former economy minister, Simón Zerpa, and a businessman who had close ties to the Nicolas Maduro government, Samark López, have also been detained.
