Warders at Horizon and Metcalf correctional centres return to work

Warders at the Horizon and Metcalfe Street correctional facilities who took protest action on Wednesday are now back on the job. The Jamaica Federation of Corrections confirmed that the officers have resumed regular duties and normality has returned to both institutions.

Arlington Turner, chairman of the Federation, spoke with RJR News:

“The officers are back on the job. We had a meeting with the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security...we have reached an amicable solution in terms of getting the officers back on the job.”

Operations at the Horizon Adult Remand Centre and the Metcalfe Street Juvenile Centre were affected Wednesday after the warders protested against what they said was a breach of protocol by Lieutenant Colonel Sean Prendergast, Commissioner of Corrections. Colonel Prendergast reportedly took a warder from the Metcalfe Street facility to the Denham Town Police Station after he was found with a cellular phone.

In the meantime, Colonel Prendergast said the case involving the warder will be referred to the Services Commission. The prison boss also disputed one union's claim that he breached protocol in taking the warder to the police.
