Washington sniper to be executed next week

John Allen Muhammad who along with Jamaican Lee Boyd Malvo embarked on a series of sniper attacks in Washington, D.C. seven years ago is scheduled to be executed next week.

Forty-eight year old Muhammad, referred to as the mastermind behind the killings, is slated for execution on November 10.

Virginia Department of Corrections spokesman Larry Traylor says Muhammad was moved two weeks ago to the death row centre in rural Greensville County.

Muhammad has filed an appeal to Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, declaring he was too mentally impaired to represent himself at his 2003 capital murder trial.

However, Governor Kaine is not expected to intervene.

In October 2002 Muhammad, who was known as the Beltway Sniper, and Malvo were blamed for 10 deaths during the shooting spree.

The random shootings occurred mostly at gas stations and shopping malls --one of the critically wounded victims included a 13-year-old boy on his way to school.

The shootings began October 2 and went on for 23 days until Muhammad, a Gulf War veteran, and Malvo were apprehended while sleeping in a car near Maryland.

For his part in the murders, Malvo, now 24, received a life sentence without possibility of parole.
