"We are thinking of vigilante justice" - frustrated fishermen

Fishermen from the community of  Whitehouse in the western parish of Westmoreland, who are being bothered by  fishing pirates, say they will resort to buying guns in order to take justice in their hands .

The fishers say boats from Honduras and Nicaragua, equipped with diving gear, have been wreaking havoc in the Jamaican waters and they are often threatened by their crews who continue to raid their fish pots.

They have also reported that crews on some of the boats, who are engaged in the illegal drugs-for-gun trade, have offered them guns in exchange for marijuana.

“We have reported to the Marine police, the Coast Guard, the fishing division and nothing has been done about it We are thinking of vigilante justice, I don’t know it will work our. We may have to  get some ganja to buy some of those guns (from the pirates) and use them to defend ourselves,” said one of the frustrated fishermen .

In response, the Marine Police, stationed in Black River, in the neighbouring parish of St Elizabeth, admitted on Wednesday that they were not equipped to deal with these pirates.

They are also seeking assistance from the Coast Guard in patrolling the waters of the south western section of the island.
