It has been revealed that welding work resulted in fires at the May Pen market in 2016 and last year.
Mayor of May Pen Winston Maragh said the fire department has still not determined the cause of the latest fire which occurred on December 1.
That fire resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in losses for vendors.
Mr. Maragh said in the aftermath of the fires in 2016 and 2018, vendors were warned to seek the assistance of engineers from the Clarendon Municipal Corporation before carrying out welding work.
He said this is also being looked at as the possible cause of the latest fire.
Speaking Tuesday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106, Mr. Maragh said a security post is also being considered for the new market.
He said the removal of fire debris is ongoing.
It is expected that vendors will occupy the space by Friday.
