Belize Police Commissioner defends his stance on court decisions after attorney association's rebuke

Police Commissioner in Belize, Chester Williams, has dismissed a statement by the Association of Defence Attorneys, following remarks he made in which he expressed disappointment with the results of several court rulings.

In the latest case involving Belizean-American Jaron James, he was fined BZ$1,500 after being charged with assaulting the top cop.

Mr Williams said he felt the fine was not a harsh enough punishment.

Additionally, the Commissioner noted that he believed the charges levied against a senior police officer, who was accused of abusing a detainee, were excessive.

The association said Mr Williams' comments bordered on contempt and that he should cease and desist.
