Cuban authorities ready to release more prisoners

Cuban authorities have indicated that they are prepared to release even more political prisoners than the 52 already agreed to, in a deal announced earlier this month.

Eleven prisoners have already been flown to Spain with their families, with the rest due to follow shortly.

The 52 prisoners who have been released are the last remaining Opposition figures who were arrested during a major government crackdown in 2003.

But according to the unofficial Cuban Human Rights Commission, there are far more than a hundred additional political prisoners on the island.

None of them were included in the recent deal brokered between the Cuban authorities, the Roman Catholic Church and the Spanish Government.

A senior Cuban official has indicated that the government is prepared to release most of these prisoners.

President of Cuba’s National Assembly said it is the government’s wish to free all the people on condition that they have not been accused of murder.

There are several people in jail who were convicted of participating in an anti-Castro bombing campaign in the 1990s.
