The Dominica Banana Producers Limited (DBPL) has warned
that the industry could be destroyed, if the Windward Islands Farmers
Association (WINFA) is allowed to proceed with plans to take over the sale of
bananas from Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia
and St. Vincent and the
Grenadines.
Under the new trading arrangement, banana companies seeking to supply fruit to the Windward Islands Banana Development and Exporting Company Limited (WIBDECO) have to be certified by an international movement seeking to ensure that producers get fair prices and terms of trade for their products.
But a spokesman for the Dominica Banana Producers Limited said WINFA does not have the capacity to manage the affairs of banana farmers in the country and that his organisation intends to challenge the situation.
The new agreement was to be signed in December last year, but the DBPL said it wanted more time to put things in order since not all farmers were fair trade certified.
