Electrical shocks from merry go round kills’ teenager

14-year-old Dexter Marshall of East Coast Demerara, was electrocuted on Sunday April 8 while on a merry-go-round contraption in his home village.

The Guyana Chronicle reports that an exposed wire may have caused the lad to be shocked.

It’s the first time that a merry-go-round had been set up in the village.

The teen’s grandmother said her grandson purchased a ticket for a ride on the merry go round after he was awakened by other boys.

His grandmother explained that as Dexter was being shocked, those around him thought that he was gimmicking, and did nothing for several minutes before they realized he was in distress.

The merry-go-round operator was reportedly told and he disconnected the contraption from a point being shared by the music system.

Dexter was flung from the horse he was riding on and reportedly landed on his neck.

The Guyana Chronicle reports that other persons had experienced slight electrical shocks from the ride earlier in the evening, but when this was conveyed to the operator, he reportedly ignored the information and continued doing business.

A post-mortem is to be performed on Dexter’s body tomorrow, to determine the cause of death.
