Guyanese official resigns over bribery allegations

A senior official of the Guyana Revenue Authority, GRA, has reportedly resigned, amidst investigations into the unauthorized release of a container, and the demand of bribes.

GRA officials confirmed, Thursday, that Ray Sukhnandan, Senior Manager of Internal Affairs and Intelligence, an arm of the GRA, reportedly tendered his resignation, via his brother, yesterday.

It is believed that he fled the country over the weekend, after a complaint was made that several officers of the department demanded a 4 million dollar bribe from a businessman for the release of the container.

The container was said to contain general merchandise.

Four other officers from the Internal Affairs Department, including one stationed at a city wharf, are also said to be involved, and under probe.

It was explained that under GRA systems, containers entering the country are randomly checked and assessed.

In cases of businesses that may have a questionable declaration history, these containers are flagged.

A GRA official said officers may have attempted to bypass this flagging by promising to release the container for a fee.
