Hospitals in Dominican Republic seeing spike in Haitian women seeking care

Hospitals in The Dominican Republic are seeing a spike in the number of Haitian women seeking care.

Many soon-to-be mothers have been forced to seek care at hospitals in neighboring Dominican Republic despite the threat of deportation.

The U.N. found in October that less than a quarter of hospitals were operating around the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, while those elsewhere struggle to cope with flows of refugees fleeing gang attacks.

Doctors in The Dominican Republic said many Haitian women are afraid to attend prenatal checkups and tend to arrive late at night or when they are about to give birth, due to the risk of deportation.

Dominican politicians have accused Haitian migrants of fueling insecurity and said their country is already giving too much.
