ICC acknowledges receiving Guyana's request for intervention in Venezuela's Essequibo election plans

The International Court of Justice has acknowledged receiving Guyana's request for provisional measures in relation to Venezuela's plans to hold elections in Essequibo.

The South American neighbours have been at odds since last year  when Venezuela announced that it would be annexing the Essequibo region.

This action would be in direct violation of the boundary line as established by the 1899 Arbitral Award.

Guyana wants the ICJ to block any attempt by Venezuela to conduct any election in respect of the territory as well as taking action which purports to annex de jure or de facto any territory on Guyana's side of the boundary line

It has also asked that the court steps in to ensure that Venezuela refrains from taking any action which would seek to modify the situation that currently prevails in the territory in dispute.
