International Court solves Honduras and Nicaragua border dispute

The International Court of Justice in The Hague has solved a long running border dispute between Honduras and Nicaragua.

Nicaragua complained eight years ago that Honduras was infringing its rights for fishing and oil resources at the mouth of the Coco River.

The world court granted Honduras sovereignty over four Caribbean islands and it drew a new maritime border between Honduras and Nicaragua that divides up rich fishing grounds and oil and gas exploration concessions.

The ruling is binding and is expected to remove tensions between the two neighbours that has led to both sides seizing one another's fishing boats.
