President of Guyana Dr Irfaan Ali
Guyana's President, Dr Irfaan Ali, has highlighted uncertainty in the global economy as a factor fuelling concerns for further increases in food prices across the region
Dr Ali, speaking after the 48th regular meeting of heads of government of Caricom in Barbados last week, pointed to the increase in the cost of eggs due to bird flu as an example of the susceptibility of the region to shocks to the food supply chain.
He has therefore has called for an increase in capacity across member states of Caricom to minimise any fallout from major trading partners.
"We're discussing the impact of these challenges for the region, and important for us, is to look at the full supply chain, to look at alternative supply routes, and to look at ways in which we can enhance and integrate our capacity and capability to withstand what could be a major shock in the global market."
