Seven days, 20 murders in Trinidad & Tobago

The bloodletting continues unabated in Trinidad & Tobago early in 2014, with 20 murders recorded in the first seven days of the year.

The Trinidad Express newspaper reports that man working as a maxi taxi tout was killed in Arima on Tuesday night.

Derek Pina, 21, was reportedly ambushed and shot at the corner of Green and St Joseph streets, approximately 8:30P.M.

Police said that Pina had worked that day, and the motive for the killing was unknown.

The newspaper quoted family members as saying that Pina had attempted to stay out of trouble by finding an honest job.

Pina's murder is unsolved, along with the other 19 which have occurred this year.

Meanwhile, the Police Service has cancelled its weekly police press conference which is usually held every Wednesday at Police Headquarters, Port of Spain.

The Government, led by Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar, in the meantime, is insisting that it is committed to dealing with the crime upsurge.

Mrs. Persad Bissessar said all leave has been restricted with immediate effect in the Trinidad & Tobago Police Service so the country can have "all hands on deck" in the fight against crime.
