England consolidate stranglehold on 3rd Ashes test versus Australia

Barring a miraculous batting performance by Peter Nevill, 37 not out, and the Australian lower order, England are in command of the 3rd Ashes test at Edgbaston in Birmingham at stumps of day-2.

Resuming on 3-133 on Thursday's second day, England contnued their reply to Australia's 136. Joe Root continued his fine Ashes form with 63 while Moeen Ali 59 and Stuart Broad 31 supported Root as England totalled 281 for a first innings lead of 145. Josh Hazlewood 3-74, Nathon Lyon 3-36, Mitchell Johnson 2-66 and Mitchell Starc 2-71 the wickettakers.

When Australia started their second innings, it was deju vu, reeling at 95-5 at one stage as Steven Finn 5-45 ripped through the soft Australia middle order. Only David Warner 77 stood tall, as Australia closed on 7-168 for an overall lead of 23 with three second innings wickets in hand, and three days to go,
