Stuart Broad was simply magical.
On this first day of the 4th Ashes test between England and Australia at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, it was all Stuart Broad, all Joe Root, and all England.
The home team, leading the 5-match series 2-1 entering the 4th test, won the toss and asked Australia to bat on a green pitch, "which looked spicy with some overhead conditions" according to former England test spinner Phil Tufnel, and Australia had no answer to the talismanic burst of Stuart Broad, 9.3 overs 5 maidens 8-15, his best test figures, and in the process collected his 300th test wicket with the 3rd ball of the day when he had Chris Rogers caught by Alastair Cook at 1st slip for Rogers' first test duck.
All of Broad's 8-wickets were caught, with the most sensational being Adam Voges who was incredibly caught one handed by Ben Stokes at 5th slip, clutching the ball which had flown to his right and behind him.
Australia were "bombed" for 60 all out in 18.3 overs or 111 deliveries, the shortest first innings in test history. Extras, 14, topscored ahead of Mitchell Johnson 13 and captain Michael Clarke 10.
Broad's 5th wicket took only 19 balls, and Australia lost its first 5 wickets in 25 balls, the quickest in test history.
According to ESPN's Jarod Kimber who was asked for his thoughts of Australia's batting performance, Kimber said "analysis? it was a crime scene."
Steven Finn took 1-21 and Mark Wood 1-13 as England left Australia in a 'foetal' position.
Australia's innings lasted close to 90 minutes, with England going to lunch at 13-0 and 99-3 at tea, with skipper Alastair Cook dismissed for 43 against Mitchell Starc who ended the day with figures of 17 overs 1 maiden 3-73.
England went on from 99-3 at tea to close on 4-274, a lead of 214 runs with 4 full days to go.
England saw in form Joseph Edward Root reach his 8th test century in his 31st test and Jonny Bairstow, 74, as the pair posted 173 for the 4th wicket to put Australia to the sword with delightful shots.
The 24 year-old Root, a Yorkshireman, reached his century off 128 balls with 17x4s, and ended the day on 124 not out off 158 balls with 19x4s and a six.
