Favourites prevail in Guineas races at Caymanas Park

The favourites obliged in Saturday's 42nd running of the Post to Post 1000 and 2000 Guineas as the first two classics of the 2016 season were contested at Caymanas Park.

Thirteen went to the post in the 1000 guineas for native-bred 3 year old fillies including Gary Subratie's 3 year old chestnut ‘Nuclear Affair’ under three time former champion jockey Dane Nelson who was made the 3-5 favourite.

‘Gold Miner", ‘Nuclear Warning’ and ‘Sorrentino's Star’ were all prominent on the headlines until the favourite made a crippling move leaving the 3 furlong marker. ‘Nuclear Affair’ won won going away,  returned 1:39.2 for the 8 furlong trip.

Meanwhile, winterbook favourite ‘Future King’ with Robert Halledeen aboard for 15 time champion trainer Wayne DaCosta turned back 13 rivals in the 2000 Guineas for native-bred 3 year colts and geldings also over a mile.

‘Future King’ began his move approaching the final bend to overtake ‘Chase The Great’ and held off the fast-finishing ‘Orpheus’ in 1:39.4.

The jockey/trainer combination of Halledeen and DaCosta were winning the event for the second consecutive year, having prevailed last year with ‘Ali Baba’.

The next big assignment for the fillies is the Jamaica Oaks in three weeks' time while the colts will look forward to the Lotto Classic for the Governor's Cup on May 28.
