Fortunes swing towards England in 3rd Ashes test against Australia

After two comprehensive victories, one by either side, England produced the goods on a difficult opening day of the 3rd Ashes test against Australia at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

The 5-match series is tied at 1-1.

Australia won the toss but were dismissed for 136 in  between two rain stoppages, as only opener Chris Rogers, 52, came to terms with a rampaging Jimmy Anderson 6-47, his best Ashes innings figures. Steven Finn on his return to test cricket was equally effective claiming 2-38 and Stuart Broad supported with a wiry spell of 2-44.

Australia were reduced to 7-94 and then 8-110 when opener Rogers was 8th out.

Replying, England reachd 3-133, with skipper Alastair Cook counting his unlucky stars, as he pulled straight to Adam Voges at short leg, with Voges holding on to a catch he knew nothing about. Adam Lyth continued his struggles in the corrridor of uncertainty and made only 10, caught in the slip cordon yet again.

Ian Bell batted sublimely for 53, while Joe Root was unbeaten on 30 and Jonny Bairstow 1.

Nathan Lyon claimed 2-wickets for 3 runs in 2 overs, while Josh Hazlewood took 1-50.

Rain reduced the 90-over quota for each day, to only 65.4, with 34.2 overs still outstanding.

Scores after day-1 of the 3rd test: Australia 136; England 3-133. England trail by 3 runs with seven first innings wickets in hand.
