Gayle and Fraser-Pryce are 2019 Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year

World champions Tajay Gayle and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce are the 2019 RJRGLEANER Sports Foundation National Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year. The 23 year old Gayle is winning this award for the first time, while Fraser-Pryce is the recipient of the award for the fouth time.

Shericka Jackson was the runner-up for Sportswoman of the Year, while Fedric Dacres was runner-up for the Sportsman of the Year. Gayle's 2019 season saw him picking up Jamaica's first ever gold medal in the long jump event at the IAAF World Championships.

Fraser-Pryce also had a big impact at the championships as she copped gold in the 100m and the 4x100m. Veronica Campbell-Brown and Merlene Ottey are the only Jamaicans to have won this award more than Fraser Pryce. 

The 33 year old also received the People's Choice Performance of the Year Award for her 100m victory at the Doha World Championships and the women's track and field Athlete of the Year. Gayle also received the men's track and field Athlete of the Year Award.

The Gleaner Newspaper Iconic Award which goes out to a sports athlete who has had a global impact went to former West Indies fast bowling legend  Courtney Walsh.The Chairman’s Award went to Princess Brown and Stephanie Dale Yee-Sing who officiated as assistant referees at the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France.

The VMBS Youth Award went to Karter Alex Powell after becoming the first Jamaican to sign with a Formula One team at 11 years of age.
