Local track and field's governing body the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) is coming under increased pressure from the world governing body, the IAAF and other stakeholders to change the date set for the National Senior Championships which is set for June 20 to 23. Telephone calls to JAAA president Dr Warren Blake for a comment on the latest development including a letter being sent from the IAAF requesting that the JAAA change the date to avoid clashes on the international calendar, went to voicemail.
However, JAAA General Secretary Garth Gayle confirmed with RJR Sports on Wednesday that the issue is up for discussion at the executive level. On January 30, the JAAA revealed that "after consideration the date for the National Junior and Senior Championships has now been fixed for June 20 to 23".
It added that it was the most convenient date for all stakeholders involved, due to the late scheduling of the IAAF World Championships in Qatar from September 28 to October 6. At that time, the JAAA noted that there was some amount of difficulty in arriving at a date convenient to all parties. The JAAA will have an executive meeting on Wednesday evening to discuss the matter.
