Even in the absence of the greatest sprinter the world has ever seen , Usain Bolt, Jamaica shone brightly to win two gold medals on the second and final day of the 2nd IAAF World Relays at the Thomas Robinson Stadium on Nassau Bahamas.
The men's 4 x 200 metre team of Nickel Ashmeade, Rasheed Dwyer, Jason Livermore and Warren Weir struck first for Jamaica, defending their title despite a poor hand over between Dwyer and Livermore who ran the penultimate leg. Warren Weir was on anchor and he made no mistake, as Jamaica was timed in 1 min 20.97 secs, a far cry from their world record time if 1 min 18.63 secs last year.
France was second and Germany third. The USA finished third but was disqualified for exchanging the baton outside the exchange box.
The women's sprint relay team of Simone Facey on lead off leg, Kerron Stewart who was magnificent on the second leg, Schillonie Calvert who maintained the Jamaican pressure, and Veronica Campbell Brown who accelerated away from Carmelita Jeter, ensured Jamaica won gold in a world leading 42.14 secs. The USA was second.
Jamaica collected silver medals in the women's 4x400 metre (Anastacia Leroy, Novlene Willliams Mills, Christine Day and Stephanie Ann McPherson) in 3 mins 22.48secs behind the USA 3 mins 18.38 secs.
Jamaica also gained a silver medals in the men's sprint relay final and the women's 4 x 200 metre final following the disqualification of the USA.
The USA topped the points table with 63 points to Jamaica's 46 points, as the USA won the Golden Baton for the second year in a row.
