No Brazil 2014 for Reggae Boyz

Jamaica ended its 2014 CONCACAF World Cup final round qualifying campaign without a victory after playing out a 2-2 draw with Honduras at the National Stadium Tuesday night.

The Jamaicans had to come from behind twice to earn the draw, which was their fifth in the Hexagonal Round.

Carlos Costly gave the Hondurans a second-minute lead before an own goal leveled things a minute later.

Honduras were back in front 12 minutes before half time, but Jamaica clawed their way back and got another equaliser from the penalty spot through captain Rodolph Austin on 60 minutes.

It was the first time the Jamaicans were scoring more than once in the final round, but Coach Winfried Schafer was not totally pleased with the performance.

“We need more than a year together as a team. This was our biggest problem and I hope in the future we have more time. I talked with Captain Burrell and he agreed with me; we need more time for our team, and training matches and then we can make substitutions,” said Schafer.

Honduras, who needed only a draw, joined the United States and Costa Rica as the automatic qualifiers from CONCACAF.

The United States topped the table on 22 points, ahead of Costa Rica 18 and Honduras 15.

Mexico ended 4th and secured the play-off spot to play against New Zealand despite going down 2-1 to Costa Rica.

Panama who led the United States 2-1 up to the 90th minute suffered a heart-breaking 3-2 defeat which crushed their dreams of reaching Brazil 2014.
