Premier League clubs try for CONCACAF Champions Cup

Jamaica's Premier League champion, Harbour View and last year's runner up Portmore United have been placed in Group C and D respectively of the Caribbean qualification for the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

The championship will first feature five groups in round-robin format between November 4 and 16.

In fact all five groups will be contested in Trinidad and Tobago.

Harbour View, the 2005 champions, will open their account on   Sunday against Puerto Rico Islanders before facing Inter Moengotapoe of Surinam and Hitachi Centre Sap of Antigua.

Portmore United FC, the 2006 champions, opens against   Newtown United of St. Kitts and Nevis on Sunday before meting   SV Leo Victor of Surinam.

The first round group winners along with the three best second-place teams will advance to the quarterfinals on 11 November.

The semifinals and final will take place at the Hasely Crawford stadium on 14 and 16 November, respectively.

Harbour View's coach, Lenny Hyde, says though the tournament could be taxing on his players, they are ready.

Portmore's coach, Linval Dixon, says although carrying a few injuries, his squad has the depth for the tournament.

The Caribbean winner will progress to the eight-team 2008 CONCACAF Champions Cup, joining the defending champion Pachuca of Mexico, another Mexican side, DC United from the US along with three Central American clubs.

Interestingly news came on Tuesday that questions over organisation and prize money have forced three-time Caribbean Football Union Club Champions W Connection to opt out of this year's competition.
