Windies women beat South Africa women in first ODI

The West Indies women defeated South Africa women by 4 wickets via the Duckworth/Lewis/Stern Method in the first of three One Day Internationals (ODI) at the Three Ws Oval at Cave Hill in Barbados on Wednesday.


Set a revised target 180 to win in the rain-affected contest, the Caribbean women go to their target for then loss of 6 wickets.

Qiana Joseph top scored with 60 off 58 balls including 10 fours and a six, while captain Hayley Matthews made 40 off 44 balls including 4 fours and a six. The two also shared in an 88 run opening stand.

Veteran Jamaican batter Stafanie Taylor also contributed 30, while another Jamaican, Chinelle Henry made 11. Ayanda Hlubi took 3-50 for the South African women.

Earlier, the South African women who were sent to bat, posted a challenging 232-9. Tazmin Brits top scored with 57, while Nadine de Klerk made 40 and Sune Luus 32. There were 2 wickets each for Karishma Ramharack and Aaliyah Alleyne.

The win stopped a miserable run of defeats for the Windies  women who lost all three T20 internationals, as well as the three one day encounters on their recent tour of England. The second ODI will be played on Saturday also at the Three Ws Oval.
