Racing surface at Caymanas Park gets high marks after inspection

The racing surface at Caymanas Park has been given high marks following its latest inspection. The two day inspection was conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week by retired US based track superintendent John Pasero. Pasero who retired in 2008 after being the superintendent for several tracks across the United States, was actually making his second visit to Jamaica, having done so in 2009 for a similar exercise.
 
He was asked by the promoting company Supreme Ventures Racing and Entertainment Limited (SVREL) to conduct an inspection of the track and recommend a maintenance programme to suit all types of weather. Pasero gave the racing surface very high marks and compared it to some of the top tracks in the United States. "The surface holds together very nicely; very kind to horses," said Pasero.

SVREL's General Manager for racetrack operations Anthony Shoucair said the promoting company would look to implement the recommendations from Pasero sooner rather than later. A strict maintenance schedule has been in effect at Caymanas park since 2003.

The racing surface currently has top cushion of 2-and-a-half to 2-and-three-quarter inches in depth. Below that are 8 inches of compact sand with a clay base underneath.
